Desk Report: Bangladesh Government has decided to award those RMG factories of the country with ‘Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Good Practice Award’ to recognize their efforts for sustainability in the ready-made garments sector.

The decision has been taken at a ministerial meeting, chaired by State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haq Chunnu, on April 1, 2018.

Labour and Employment Secretary Afroza Khan, Inspector General of Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment M Shamsuzzaman Bhuiyan, Additional Secretary Ashraf Shamim, BGMEA Director Saifuddin Ahmed and Secretary General of Bangladesh Employers Federation M Faruque Ahmed, among others, were also present in the meeting.

According to the release, the Government will award 10 apparel manufacturing factories on the occasion of Occupational Safety and Health Day on April 28, 2018.

Bangladesh’s President Abdul Hamid will grace the ceremonial occasion and hand over the awards.

Factories with a minimum of 5,000 worker-base enlisted with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and 2,000 worker-base enlisted with Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will be eligible for receiving the award.

The factories will have to apply for the award on a prescribed form available.

Notably, Bangladesh’s garment manufacturers have heavily invested in factory standardization and creating a safe working environment for the workers after a series of major industrial disasters like Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashions fire tainted the industry’s reputation worldwide.

At present, Bangladesh has around 67 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified factories.
