Washim Mia, Staff Correspondent: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Shojag Coalition and Garments Industry to end the gender-based violation in factories at Conference Hall of Hotel HighGarden Uttara, Dhaka today on 11 February 2018. It was organised by the SNV Netherlands Development Organization.
Four renowned garments factories of the country – Millenium Textiles Limited, Southern Fashions Limited, Annesha Styles Limited and Hydroxide Knitwear Limited signed the MoU of the project of Shojag (Awaken) Coalition. They are to provide services to factory workers especially to the female under this Shojag project.
Shojag (awaken) is a coalition consisting of five different organizations- Naripokkho (Lead Role), Christian Aid, BRAC, BLAST and SNV which is formed with a view to ending gender-based violation (GBV) in the garments industry by raising awareness, strengthening the capacity of accountable private and public bodies, protecting the rights and legal entitlements of female workers and engaging factories towards promoting systemic changes across the garment sector. The 2.5 years transited project will be implemented by the financial assistance of the Global Fund for Women to reduce gender-based violence (GBV) in the garment industry.
At the very beginning of the program, Fartheeba Rahat Khan, Team Leader, SNV Netherlands Development Organization greeted all the guests and participants. She emphasized on SNV’s initiatives in Bangladesh since 2014 for the worker’s health and well-being belonging to RMG sector.
She mentioned, “We are pleased to announce that more than 10,000 RMG workers are going to be benefited through today’s deal in terms of ending gender-based violation in the garments industry. So, it’s another success for SNV to bring you all under the same roof”.
The event was attended by the respected and distinguished guests. Among them, Khandakar Younus Al Hossain Benju, Director, Millennium Textiles (Southern) Ltd; Mr. Ashrafur Rahman Ranzu, Millennium Textiles (Southern) Ltd.; Ms. Maheen Sultan, Tram Leader, Shojag; Mr. Abdul Mottaleb, Managing Director, Global Sustainable Certification Services (GSCS); Mr. Tayebur Rahman, Project Manager, BLAST; Ms. Rowshan Ara, Project Director, Naripokkho; Barrister Ummehani Binte Ariff, Senior Executive(Analysis & Strategy); Human Rights and Legal Aid Services, BRAC; Mr. Mohsin Hossain, AGM, Annesha Style Ltd.; Ms. Ribon Begum, HR Officer, Hydroxide Knitwear Ltd.; Ms. Shaila Ashraf, Corporate HR Head, Renaissance Group; Mr. Jamal Uddin, Inclusive Business Advisor, SNV; Mr. Rubait Reza Khan, Project Officer of Christian Aid and other representatives from different print and electronic media were present at the MoU signing ceremony.
Later on, a capacity building workshop was also conducted by Mr. Jamal Uddin, Inclusive Business Advisor, SNV Netherlands Development Organization. In it, he unfolded the theme head to toe of this contract.
Everybody expressed their views regarding the prevailing sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the RMG sector.
The initiatives taken for eradicating the sexual harassment and gender-based violence from the factory workers working in the garment industries are highly applauded by the presence.
