Staff Reporter: Speakers shed light on RMG workers’ nutrition and productivity improvement in a round-table discussion on “Adequate Nutrition for Workers- Economic and Social Benefits of Fortified Rice” yesterday, 16th February 2019, in Chattogram.
The discussion was jointly organized by United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) and Social Responsibility Asia (SR Asia) Bangladesh.
Honorable Mayor, Chattogram City Corporation, Mr. A. J. M. Nasir Uddin was present as the Chief Guest with Ms. Sumaya Rashid, Country Director of SR Asia Bangladesh at the chair.
The roundtable discussion was organized to acknowledge the changing paradigm of CSR in Bangladesh and provide a platform to discuss among RMG stakeholders for giving emphasis to workers’ healthcare and improve nutritional conditions which contributes to accelerate productivity. The Scaling Up Rice Fortification initiative aims to reduce micro nutrient deficiencies in high-risk groups with a strong focus on women and children, by providing rice fortified with essential vitamins and minerals. With funding from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and support from DSM, this joint initiative between WFP and the Government of Bangladesh is being implemented since 2013.
Mr. Rezaul Karim, Head of Programme- UNWFP Bangladesh, Mr. Md. Omar Faruque, Additional Secretary- Ministry of Food, Mr.Rajib Das Sujoy, Director- BKMEA, Mr. Showkat Osman, Former Director- BKMEA, Ms. Abida Mostafa, Senior Vice President- Chattogram Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Mr. Shahariar Alam, Advisor- SR Asia Bangladesh were also present as the Special Guests.
