BGMEA President’s focus on sustaining the current apparel export trend in 2022

Md. Ariful Islam, Staff Reporter: Apparel sector of Bangladesh, the largest export earner for the country, is eyeing on keeping its present growth momentum on for the year 2022. The growth rate of RMG exports of Bangladesh to United States of America has surpassed that of China, Vietnam and Indonesia in the first 10 months of 2021.

“Sustaining the existing export trend is one of the key challenges for the country’s readymade garment industry,” said Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Mr. Faruque Hassan.

Also expressing his concern over the spread of Omicron in major markets, he said that high prices of raw materials and shipping costs might bring setback to RMG export earnings.

“If the pandemic situation doesn’t deteriorate further, the present growth might continue in the new year”, he noted.

“We have many work orders and more will come here in Bangladesh,” he said adding that timely execution of orders is important.

He stressed for skilled development of workers, improvements in infrastructure especially in airports and all land ports and simplification of export-import activities to sustain the growth.

Noted, Bangladesh’s export earnings from the USA increased by 27 percent during Jan-Oct period compared to last year’s corresponding period while the China’s export growth was 25 percent, Vietnam’s 14 percent and Indonesia’s 10 percent.
