Desk Report: Workers in Ashulia, Savar, blocked roads in protest against the layoff announcement by Birds Group. On Wednesday, August 28, from 8:15 AM to 10:30 AM, they obstructed roads in the Baipail area of Ashulia, halting traffic on the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway and the Baipail-Abdullahpur road.
On-site reports revealed that at 8:15 AM, a large number of workers from RNR Fashions Ltd., Birds Garments Ltd., Birds Fadrex Ltd., and Birds A & Z Ltd.—all subsidiaries of Birds Group—gathered on the northern side of the Baipail intersection on the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway to protest the layoff announcement. This caused a complete halt to traffic on both sides of the highway. Later, when some workers moved to the Baipail intersection, nearby factories, including Fountain Garments Manufacturing Ltd. and 4-5 others, declared general holidays due to fears of unrest. At 10:00 AM, a patrol team from the army and BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) arrived at the scene and urged the workers to clear the road. The workers complied by moving to one side, and within 30 minutes, traffic resumed.
Meanwhile, at 10:40 AM, seven buses carrying workers set off toward the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association). Currently, patrol teams from the army, BGB, and Industrial Police remain at the site.
