The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has set ambitious sustainability goals to be achieved by 2030. Their targets include reducing carbon emissions by 30 per cent, incorporating sustainable raw materials in 50 per cent of their production, and cutting groundwater usage by 50 per cent.
Furthermore, they aim to achieve 100 per cent zero discharge of hazardous chemicals as part of their sustainability vision.
Under this comprehensive sustainability plan, BGMEA also strives to reduce energy consumption by 30 per cent, increase the use of renewable energy sources to 20 per cent, and decrease deforestation by 30 per cent by the year 2030.’
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, emphasizing that it is not a future threat but a current reality. He stressed the importance of taking action to curb carbon emissions and reduce environmental pollution.
These commitments were announced during the launch of a report titled ‘The case for just transitions in energy, agricultural, and RMG sector in Bangladesh’ in Dhaka recently. Hassan also emphasized that as brands set ambitious sustainability goals, it is their responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind in the supply chain.
The RMG industry in Bangladesh has witnessed substantial growth in the number of green garment factories. Currently, there are 200 LEED-certified green garment factories in the country, with 73 of them achieving the highest platinum category certification. These eco-friendly factories incorporate environmentally friendly features and emit 40 per cent less carbon compared to conventional factories.
